Sir Jack's first Indy came in 1960. It began a revolution that rocked the Indy dinosaur world! I began with a "Hong Kong" toy that came from Portugal! That mold really moves around! I found little in the way of research drawings, but did find some good photos...
Anyway, I started by cutting the body work at the seems...
The nose needed extending so I added a bit more from a AMT Lotus kit (now I'd vac-form the pieces rather than cut up a good body!), putties and sanded to shape...
I also began to add the enlarged fuel tank...
I realized as more research came to light that the tank was a bit larger that I thought. So, I built it out with thin layers of putty( I ruined a Lotus Mk18 because I put the putty on too thick, too quickly)...
I began test fitting parts to see how it would go together and added the under nose scoop, puttied, and sanded...
At this point I primered the body. I had decided not to include the Climax engine, too.
I decided to make things difficult because I had gone this far so-o-o-o-o "Off with the engine cover!"...
I added a simple tube chassis and added the inside of the pannier tanks...
I assembled my parts for a family photo, a before assembly pix...
The magical spares box provided the parts for the front suspension, with the spring over damper units scratched from tubing and springs from my students' throw-away Bic pencils! I assembled them as units for easier construction...
I think the Dunlop wheels came from a Southeast Finecast BRM kit as did the tires( the tires are not to scale for the BRM and work very well for the early 60's Indy cars.). The Transaxel came from an AMT Indy Lotus, and the beautiful Webers came from the now defunct (unfortunately!!!!) Mini-Exotics...
Assembly began in good faith...
An Offy substituted for a Coventry-Climax (they look similar) and test fitted...
The engine was glued slightly canted to the left for better handling and glued it in place. I then did my favorite work , that of adding some decals!!!...
I finished off the front suspension by hanging the tire/wheel units on...
Detail work on the engine began by adding plug wires, fuel lines, and coolant tubes...
I added the outside water line, seat belts, and fuel cap. This was the first time Jack had ever worn seat belts and was made a believer forever...
The rear suspension parts came from a variety of places too many to recall...
I added a push bar from a Monogram sprint car to the rear deck, added the exhause and did my usual thing with the shock/spring units...
This was truly a labor of love for me as I really like the idea that Indy dinosaurs began their demise when this little meteor struck the bricks...
from that to this...
Here's another for you Down Under types, thinkin' of ya.
