Accurate shifter balls?

 I'm never happy with the shifter balls/knobs on cars that use a floor shifter. There's always a seam in the ball which is hard to sand out and still have the ball be round. Since shifters are molded in one piece,the ball and stick don't look like two pieces as they should. I've tried using a bent hatpin with a round head,but the "stick" is too thin and round.

Any good ideas out there?
